Here at FabLab Castelfranco Veneto we are developing a research project on conductive fabrics. Recently we have realized a prototype of a waistcoat with LEDs sewn on its back, in order to create two turn signals.
LEDs have been sewn with conductive thread, of wich we've tested different types. Each turn signal is connected to a 3V coin cell battery. We've tried how many LEDs could be supported by a single battery and in the end we used five LEDs on each side.
On the front of the waistcoat we've created two "textile buttons", sewing a piece of velostat between two layers of fabric. Velostat is a pressure-sensitive conductive material; when you press on the "button" on the right, the corresponding turn signal on the back lights up, the same happens when you press the "button" on the left.
